Five Mistakes to Avoid in a Job Interview

03-05-2021

  1. LACK OF SPONTANEITY

Applicants must be previously prepared for any interview in terms of the company’s business as well as the job they may undertake in the future.

On the other hand, this preparation may also be related to some questions that might be asked during the interview, which applicants must be prepared to answer without hesitating. It is however important to advise you that you must have the right amount of preparation as not to take away any spontaneity from the answers.

Being as spontaneous and natural as possible may separate you from the other applicants.

  1. LACK OF INTEREST

At the final stage of an interview there is a period of time for asking questions or stating any doubts that arose during the interview. For which reason, this is a good opportunity to ask pertinent questions.

Having no questions at the final stage may show lack of interest and may influence the decision of who is going through to the next stage.

  1. OVERCONFIDENCE

This question is often asked in a job interview: ‘what are your main flaws?’ This question is not opening a door for applicants to undervalue themselves, it is rather an opportunity for applicants to show that they are aware of their exact qualities, for which reason they also know their flaws and what they need to work on in the future.

It is therefore important that you do not appear to be arrogant or overconfident but rather seem at ease when this type of question is asked.

  1. PREVIOUS JOBS

Taking advantage of a moment during the interview to criticise companies, former bosses, and/or former co-workers is a common mistake and should be avoided at all times.

This is unprofessional behaviour and may jeopardise any chance you have of moving to the next stage. For this reason, if you wish to talk about past experiences, you may do so on a positive note.

  1. LACK OF HONESTY

Showing different characteristics than those you actually have or enhancing qualities that you do not possess will sooner or later come to light.

Employers may perceive that you are insecure or untrustworthy, for which reason they will not trust you with a job in the company.

It is important to make a good first impression.
